Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been demoted to third-string quarterback after lying to the organization about photos of him partying surfaced and, according to Yahoo Sports, he may not dress for Monday night’s game against Baltimore.
The video shows Manziel singing while holding what appeared to be a champagne bottle at a club in Austin, Texas, over the weekend during the team’s bye week – six days after he was given the starting job. In their last game, Browns won 33-30 in overtime.
This is a heavy dose of adversity.
“I haven’t done the worksheet yet, but that always comes down to projected health, where we are at other positions”, Pettine said. Never mind his contention that his move “is not a dead end. This is a hurdle”.
I’ve already made my feelings known about this week’s events regarding Johnny Manziel. But I’m just not going there today.
Pettine struck all the right chords this week in discussing the demotion of the franchise’s most famous and polarizing player. “I’ve seen it”, Pettine said.
Pettine and DeFilippo both said they were not sure if Manziel would be active against the Ravens. Gruden will call Monday night’s Ravens-Browns game for ESPN. The benching was a hard blow to the 22-year-old, but Pettine said it was essential if he’s going to develop into a full-time starter. He’s made great progress. But sometimes, you gotta take a step back to take a few forward…. Instead, he saw fit to hand the pigskin to Josh McCown (all of 35 and fresh off a rib injury), with Austin Davis serving as backup. At one point, Manziel dejectedly hung his head and stared at the grass under his feet as the Browns practiced on another shockingly mild late November afternoon.
The victory in Baltimore was McCown’s best game of the season on multiple fronts. This is especially concerning as Manziel had a 10-week stint in rehab this offseason and the team stood by him when he returned from that.
Which means Manziel likely will find his way back onto the field this season. “You lose trust in buckets and you regain it in drops”.
For the past number of years, Baltimore (3-7) has been a model of stability at quarterback during a largely successful eight-year run under Flacco and Coach John Harbaugh. “I think from a pure quarterbacking play standpoint the arrow is up”.
Schaub makes his first start since Week 17 of the 2013 season while with Houston.
“Josh has demonstrated throughout that he’s a competitor”, Pettine said.
“I think it’s important that if you have rules and guidelines and people tell you something, that you have follow through”, Thomas said. It is not just about what you do on the field.
Its a credit to Johnny, McCown said.
McCown complimented Manziel for taking notes in meetings and doing everything he was supposed to do Wednesday despite the circumstances. “I think Johnny has played enough football where we know what we have in him”.

“We talked about some deep and philosophical things”. “I feel like we will have good energy and we will go out there and play well”.
