Mockingjay wins the weekend box office

So yes, while “Mockingjay Part 2” opened to the lowest grossing opening of the series domestically last weekend, if this rate keeps up it should get within spitting distance of at least the original “Hunger Games” movie ($694.4 million).

The film has also grossed $62 million (GBP38.75 million) overseas for a worldwide total of $440.7 million (GBP275.4 million).

Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur” opened in second place, with 55.6 million dollars in five-night sales and 39.2 million dollars in three-day frame.

Hollywood had a good but not record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend at box office, with the Hunger Games and a new Disney Pixar animation clinching the top two positions.

Coming in at No. 2 was the Pixar/Disney release of The Good Dinosaur, which earned a solid $56 million in its first weekend.

Landing in third place was the underdog of the holiday weekend, MGM/New Line’s boxing drama, Creed.

Audiences had their pick of genres over the crowded Thanksgiving weekend. Yet, it has so far made $198.3 million in North America. The film revives Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky in an inspiring story about his rival Apollo Creed’s illegitimate son, played by Michael B. Jordan.

“Victor Frankenstein” was the weekend’s final new wide release, and it just barely cracked the top twelve. They earned $12.8 million and $9.7 million, respectively, over the holiday weekend. But while it didn’t manage a high opening by Pixar standards, it should remain in the top 10 for quite a few weeks since it’s one of the few real family-friendly films in theaters. Historically, Thanksgiving kidpics with positive buzz can finish with three times their 5-day openings or more. The $37-million spinoff from the popular “Rocky” movie series by director Ryan Coogler (“Fruitvale Station”) beat its $35-million projection.

Nevertheless, it held off plenty of new releases. Unless it has an incredible hold and Mockingjay struggles next weekend, The Good Dinosaur may be the first Pixar movie never to reach first place at any point during its run. The $30.12 million it made over the weekend alone makes it the second-biggest domestic opening of any of the previous six movies in the “Rocky” franchise. The drama, which stars Eddie Redmayne as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe, earned a per-theater average of $46,250. The uptick follows several weekends of disappointing returns as flops like “The Last Witch Hunter”, “The 33” and “Steve Jobs” pulled down box office results.
