The previous two “Hunger Games” films have both debuted the week before Thanksgiving and gone on to rule multiplexes over the holiday.
Audiences had their pick of genres over the crowded Thanksgiving weekend. Will it reach the $755.4 million of “Mockingjay – Part 1″? Final domestic figures will be released Monday. EW called the movie “the best installment since the 1976 original”.
As a result, the 2015 domestic box office is now pacing just ahead of 2013, the current record holder with $10.9 billion. “Pixar has always been a brand that is for all audiences”. That would be one of the biggest opening weekends in the franchise’s history.
Disney still has plenty of time ahead. Now they give us The Good Dinosaur. Reaching that mark is not guaranteed right now for The Good Dinosaur.
“Part 2” lorded over “The Good Dinosaur” and “Creed” during its five-day run in the United States and Canada. Significant markets included France, the U.K., Russian Federation and Latin America.
Distributed by Warner Bros., the film stars Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson.
At the core of the success is a very strong product.
Along with the Rocky Balboa latest edition “Creed”. And worldwide, the movie is at $750 million- the second highest grossing James Bond film by a 20% margin.
Fox’s The Peanuts Movie landed in fifth with $9.7 million from 3,089 theaters. Sony’s raunchy comedy The Night Before followed with an estimated $8.2M dropping only 17% in its sophomore session. In its second weekend, Carol took in a $203,076 from four locations in NY and Los Angeles for a theater average of $50,769 and cume of $588,355 for The Weinstein Co.
Awards hopefuls filled up the rest of the top ten. The story of an Irish immigrant making her way in 1950s NY took in $US4.8 million after increasing from 598 to 897 locations. The animated film earned $US56 million over the five-day holiday. Coming in significantly lower than projected with only $3.4 million, the movie starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy did not crack the top 10.
The overall revenue for the 5-day outing hitting an estimated $256-M, + 12 percent from past year. Reviews have been good, but not stellar for the Focus release.
