Thousands attend climate march in Vancouver

The cancelling of the march in Paris has not stopped demonstrations in other countries from attracting thousands.

Claris Figuera is one of the organizers of today’s march to mark the eve of the Paris Climate Change Summit.

GetUp! describe the move as “the biggest coordinated door knock ever attempted by community groups will send a clear message to political leaders that it’s time to stand up to the big polluters and take action to stop damage to our climate and way of life”.

On Vancouver Island there were marches in Victoria, Nanaimo and Courtenay.

And many people turned out show their solidarity.

“Just trying to do my part in raising awareness”.

Thousands of people packed the shaded square outside the Vancouver Art Gallery on a sunny Sunday afternoon before marching through the city’s downtown core.

Organizer Ruth Walmsley represents one of the 50 local organizations that put the rally together, one of many taking place worldwide.

The recent attacks in Paris led French President Francois Hollande to bar all protests in the city surrounding the United Nations climate talks, including the Global Climate March, which expected to have 500,000 attendees.

Robertson sat down with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Environment Minister Catherine McKenna earlier in the day to discuss the importance of collaboration between the federal government and Canada’s municipalities in fighting climate change.
