On the other hand, Pixar’s second animated movie for this year, “Good Dinosaur” grossed $55.6 million on its first five days. Technically the film also opened ahead of A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2, but those were only initially opened in a 1-theatre limited release.

The film has received a knockout score of 93% on review site RottenTomatoes.com and an “A” CinemaScore with moviegoers.

Disney still has plenty of time ahead.

“The Good Dinosaur” had a troubled production history. Historically, Thanksgiving kidpics with positive buzz can finish with three times their 5-day openings or more.

The Good Dinosaur by Pixar studios landed on the second place. Significant markets included France, the U.K., Russian Federation and Latin America.

“Philadelphia is on fire and it has been since opening day”, Jeff Goldstein, a distribution executive vice president at Warner Bros., the studio that is distributing the film, told Variety.

Creed, starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, showed the Rocky franchise is far from dead.

At the core of the success is a very strong product. Brooklyn followed close behind with an estimated $3.8 million. “By the end of the run I think that will give us a number that rivals what other Pixar films have put up historically”. In fifth spot was “The Peanuts Movie” at $9.8 million. Fox’s cume to date is $116.8M.

The Night Before held on pretty well in its second week, down two to #6 with $8.2 million. Total is $24.1M.

In its 4th week of release, Sony’s “Spectre” demonstrated an incredible hold, a minuscule -14.9% drop from last weekend. The $40-M Fox (NASDAQ:FOX) movie placed # 12 with a dismal five-day gross of $3.4-M from 2,797 theaters. Totals are $12.3M and $7.3M, respectively.

Closing out the top ten was The Martian, bringing in $3.3 million in its ninth week. It’s the second biggest hit ever for Matt Damon and still has a shot at surpassing The Bourne Ultimatum thanks to great legs. That was an expected drop despite the weekend considering the lukewarm critical and audience reception. While the film Victor Frankenstein by FOX was one of the worst wide release openings.

“Spotlight“, the movie staring Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams about the Boston Globe’s investigation of the Catholic Church’s coverup of sexually abusive priests in Boston, earned $4.5 million over three days and $12.3 million since its opening.

Disney has made a habit of launching animated fare over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.

The family-friendly film was the first big screen rendering in 35 years for the comic book characters created by the late Charles Schulz, who died in 2000.
