Daniel Sturridge is off again

The Englishman suffered a foot problem ahead of Thursday’s Europa League game against Bordeaux at Anfield.

Sturridge has been restricted to just three appearances this season because of injuries, which already limited him to 18 games in all competitions last term.

“You have to learn what is serious pain or only pain – but of course everyone wants him back”.

“Now we can say it’s not that serious, but it’s not possible [for him] to go on as before”.

Klopp’s immediate attention is on Sunday’s Premier League game against Swansea City as Liverpool look to build on last weekend’s impressive 4-1 win at Manchester City.

“I can not think of this like you because I have not been here that long”, he began.

Asked by BT Sport whether he had received an infamous Klopp hug yet, Gerrard replied: “I got one off him, they’re quite nice”.

Instead Klopp wants the striker to work on the intensity of his training, and for all the Liverpool backroom staff to begin to understand when he can risk playing, and when it is unwise to do so.

Jurgen Klopp’s press-conference today, reported in the Echo, was typically jovial – but he made some very interesting and important claims about Daniel Sturridge.

“The training for him was intensive as it should be”.

“They did well but we knew [about them] before and that it can be hard to defend against them, so you have to be better with the ball and then they cannot do this”.

Klopp also spoke on the return to action of Henderson, who has been absent since the second match of the season after suffering a broken foot in August.

“I don’t know too much about the situation because it was in the afternoon after training – not what I saw as we trained in two groups and I was with the starting line-up”, he said. Okay. We have to decide whether to play build-up or long ball and sometimes you have to decide late. But we have to wait to see how he adapts to training. Do the club start to think they need to move him on, to get a good fee and save on his big wages?
