Target site overwhelmed with traffic on Cyber Monday

However, while shoppers looked forward to this year’s Cyber Monday, it seems two of the biggest online websites that should be participating in today’s shopping craze are down.

Online shoppers found technical difficulties on Cyber Monday, with Target’s site intermittently unable to handle traffic and PayPal also hit by outages, according to consumer tweets and stores.

“Please hold tight”, the website said below the image of a red traffic light. “If you wouldn’t mind holding, we’ll refresh automatically & get things going ASAP”, Target’s website said.

USA holiday shopping is on track for a 3.7% rise this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Target went down around 10 AM ET this morning, but came back intermittently around 10:40 AM ET. Visitors can simply type CYBER15 during checkout to take advantage of the deal.

PayPal is having an even rougher time, with outages occurring yesterday and today, according to several reports.

Sweden-based online conglomerate Qliro Group AB, No. 44 in the Internet Retailer 2015 Europe 500, reported record sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving, commonly known as Black Friday. The NRF expects roughly 121 millions Cyber Monday shoppers this year compared to the expected 126.9 million last year. The event marks the first workday after the Thanksgiving weekend and is typically one of the busiest days for shopping online. To manage the volume, Target is metering traffic and working to ensure all customers are able to get on the website.

There are a lot of online retailers that are popular all year round but some of them experience an upsurge of popularity during sale times.
