“I never thought we would have the opportunity to do this and I can’t believe we did it”.

“I walked past the Belgium captain in the corridor as we were coming off our court and they were going on”.

The 28-year-old played more than 100 matches this year and worked overtime against Belgium in Ghent at the weekend to ensure Britain won the trophy for the first time since 1936.

“I’ve lost in the final there four times, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to do it next year”.

After Murray won the match, he dropped down on his back with his teammates all over him. Look at how Andy played, there was nothing more David could do.

British tennis fans face a battle to secure tickets to watch their Davis Cup-winning heroes in action in their first match as champions next year. Nothing may ever top this now, although hopefully we can win it again next year or we can go on to win Grand Slams and Wimbledon or Olympics and stuff’. I think that’s the case for all of the team, ‘ said Murray, who joked that all his colleagues deserved knighthoods. “Since the first time I played Davis Cup, when I was 17, I was unbelievably passionate, and I loved it”, he said.

“He’s just incredible. But he’ll be the first to say that this is a team effort, and rightly so”, said Smith.

With Great Britain leading 2-1 thanks to Murray’s victory over Ruben Bemelmans on Friday and his doubles win with brother Jamie over David Goffin and Steve Darcis on Saturday, Murray faced off with world no. 16 Goffin on Sunday knowing that he could seal victory for Great Britain with a victory.

Other players have contributed to the success but in winning 11 of the 12 rubbers it has taken for Britain to clinch the title, there is no doubt one man is primarily to thank.

It was the World No.2, though, who landed the first blow, breaking the Goffin serve to love in the sixth game and that proved enough for him to take the set 6-3 in 48 minutes on his fourth set point. Lord Sugar does, proclaiming on Twitter: “Andy Murray for a Knighthood”. Goffin, who lost to Murray 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 at Wimbledon in 2014 and 6-1, 6-0 earlier this month in Paris, accounted himself well over the course of two hours and 54 minutes. Murray broke into tears, unable to hold his emotions in check. A sizzling backhand cross-court victor gave Murray two break points and Goffin then played a forehand wide. Then, as many times during the match, he pounced on Goffin’s second serve to break the Belgian at love and regain the initiative.
