Cyber Monday, there’s still Time to go Online

The sales promotion day, a concept first imported from the United States in 2010, was much more of an online event this year compared to last as shoppers opted to use websites rather than visit physical stores.

“US consumers have turned into digital shopping ninjas this holiday season as retailers continue to adjust to a huge influx of smartphone shoppers”, said Adobe Digital Index principal analyst Tamara Gaffney.

While the Target store in Dickson City remained busy after the Black Friday weekend rush, target.com saw unprecedented demand on Cyber Monday for a time.

According to TIME, Black Friday sales fell from $11.6 billion in 2014 to $10.4 billion in 2015. The retailer gave shoppers access to all Black Friday deals online starting Thursday morning, and reported that Thanksgiving Day became its biggest day for online sales all year.

Best Buy has a list of deals, offering up to 50 percent off some electronics both online and in-store.

At HHGregg in Dickson City, there were plenty of in-store shoppers on Cyber Monday too, taking advantage of the deals in person. Amazon started “Lightning Deals” on Saturday and Wal-Mart beginning all of its Cyber offers on 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Even as retailers were ringing up big online sales, the day provided ample evidence that some of them still have a long way to go to adapt to an era when more and more people are shopping from their smartphones and tablets. According to that survey, half of workers said they’ll be spending at least some work time holiday shopping, up 3 percent from previous year. The company does about 10 percent of its sales year-round online.

Shoppers traded bricks for clicks on Monday, flocking online to snap up “Cyber Monday” deals on everything from cashmere sweaters to Star Wars toys.

“Black Friday is becoming less and less of a bellwether for holiday sales”, Martin said.

The e-commerce giant is cleaning house, with sales up 23 percent year-over-year.

“We didn’t do any special deals this year because it has been taken over by the Black Friday weekend now”.

“Secondly, it is hamstrung by its own name – primarily making it an online only shopping day”.

“The retailers found that the added costs for doing extended hours just didn’t pay off”, said Mark Vitner, a senior economist with San Francisco-based Wells Fargo.

Kohl’s ( KSS ), and Staples ( SPLS ), which are drawing investors’ attention with sizzling deals and free shipping on most products.

“That extra 5 percent convinced me to buy a few more”, she said.
