Microsoft has introduced PowerApps, which will allow business employees, developers and IT professionals to create and share business apps with their coworkers or teams ‘within minutes’.

Enterprise: adds all the features of Standard with dedicated infrastructure (Azure App Service Environment), App governance, secure access control and usage reporting, API management.

“While companies are increasingly turning to SaaS solutions for specific scenarios like CRM, travel and HR, using services like Microsoft Dynamics, Concur or Workday, most business app scenarios still remain locked on premises, dependent on corporate connected PCs”, Bill Staples, corporate vice president of the Azure App Platform, said today in a statement.

The idea is to solve what Microsoft calls the “innovation gap” between consumer apps, which are in their heyday, and business apps, which the company says have yet to fully take advantage of the proliferation of mobile devices. “It balances power between IT and business users, arming those closest to business needs with tools and services to not just envision but also implement the solution. These tools work in concert with enterprise-grade services for professional developers and IT professionals, so everyone can work together to unlock new business agility”.

Other vendors, such as Salesforce and Adobe, have made similar moves in opening opportunities to develop apps for businesses. Microsoft has yet to release any price details. The final version, with connections to software-as-a-service applications such as Office 365, will also be free, but IT and developer users should contact Microsoft for pricing information, according to the company.
