Blockade ‘risk’ to Nepalese children

Nepal’s top political leaders met Monday with representatives of the Madhesi ethnic group who are protesting against the new constitution to try to end a months-long crisis, but no agreement was reached.

The incident happened on a day when the CPN-Maoist led by Netrabikram Chand enforced a general strike across the country to protest “India’s blockade” of trading points with Nepal.

In a stark warning, Unicef says supplies of vaccines and antibiotics in the country are now critically low – and the fear is that children could be the worst hit.

The government and opposition parties will sit for talks again ahead of the Wednesday meeting to forge a common stance on the demands presented by the Madhesi parties.

Nepal and India do not have a new version of the extradition treaty or mechanism for mutual legal assistance.
