Obama Administration: States Can’t Legally Block Refugees

One of the Vermont Republicans seeking his party’s nomination to run for governor next year says he’s become more comfortable with the vetting of Syrian refugees after learning more about how refugees are screened before they are brought to the United States.

The agency is under contract with the State Department to resettle about 30 percent of the 70,000 refugees the country accepts annually.

The House overwhelmingly passed a measure earlier this month to make it more hard for Syrian refugees to enter the country, following the November 13 terrorist attack in Paris in which at least one assailant is suspected of entering the country posed as a migrant.

“Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Today, we give thanks for all of our loved ones and the courageous men and women in uniform who serve our country”, Obama tweeted.

About thirty state governors have recently hinted to block refugees from settling in their states. Hickenlooper recognizes that his power to stop refugees from being resettled in Colorado is limited.

Mulvaney, though, also issued a statement regarding the need to protect Syrian Christians who would be affected by a refugee program pause and vowed his support to find refuge for Syrian Christians.

It quoted the 1964 Civil Rights Act that prohibits discrimination and said that state officials can’t take it upon themselves to deny programs approved by the federal government.

“We have, for years, safely admitted refugees from all over the world, including Syrian refugees, and we have a great deal of experience screening and admitting large numbers of refugees from chaotic environments, including where intelligence holdings are limited”, Henshaw said.

“We equip churches to respond tangibly”, Yang said.

USA immigration system critic Julie Axelrod, director of investigations at the Immigration Reform Law Institute, said the onus should be on other Arab nations to do more for the refugees.

Forty-seven House Democrats joined 242 Republicans in calling for such an action, though Obama has said he would veto the bill even if it passes the Senate.

For no one, other than the Butcher Assad and the unspeakable al-Baghdadi, is as responsible for the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria as is President Obama.

On Wednesday, the Obama administration sent letters to states warning that refusing to help would break a 1980 law that requires states to provide assistance without regard to race, religion or national origin.
