Local non-profit organizations are expecting a number of volunteers on Thanksgiving day, but their need for volunteers goes beyond the holiday weekend.

“So what we want to do is help those families relieve that stress and it’s truly a community effort, we have hundreds of people collecting toys for kids of all ages”, said Gordon Mesedahl, Director of Development for Duluth’s Salvation Army.
“We would love to be able to have this go one for longer and serve more people”.
Salvation Army staff say the meal is open to anyone in need.
In all, The Salvation Army of Woodland will assist 65 families this Christmas season with food boxes and new toys.
The people who show up for meals such as this need a place to eat and rest, he said.
The meals are served from 11am – 3pm at The Salvation Army Headquarters, 1009 Dauphin Street.
Ellesmere Port families will not be forgotten this Christmas thanks to a present appeal.
He spent his Thanksgiving Day at the Salvation Army in Greenville and ate a hot meal. As we head into the busy season you’ll hear the bells ringing for the Red Kettles and see the Angel Trees at area businesses.
“The smiles I get gives me a warm feeling inside, you know to find out there are so much many people out there that really do care”, he said.
Poe says they are always looking for volunteers.
“They can donate volunteer hours, they can serve on our advisory board, they can volunteer as a kettle bell ringer, so there’s lots of different ways that they can be involved and help serve those in our community”, she said.
“The funds raised during the campaign are used for the charity’s Christmas programs, but also helps fund them for the rest of the year”.

Garces is an 11-year member of the Salvation Army and runs the facility at 271 Appleton St. just off High Street with his wife Lt. Nancy Garces, also an 11-year member.
