Police said no evidence of an explosive device was found but a spokesperson for the airport told Kanal 3 that a specialist sniffer dog on a routine patrol had reacted to the van, sparking further investigation.
Television footage showed a police bomb disposal squad surrounded by counter-terrorism officers, border guards, fire fighters, and medical teams.
Airport chief executive Hristo Shterianov said a statement issued by the spokeswoman had been incorrect.
Kostov said that the van fitted a certain risk profile and therefore had been checked.

Police said the driver, a foreigner, parked the white Mercedes Vito outside at around 1:00 am (2300 GMT) and took a flight around 5:00 am (0300 GMT).
