Industry was represented at Monday’s launch ceremony by France’s solar leader Engie, whose CEO Gerard Mestrallet said the energy form was already cost-competitive without subsidies in some regions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a stern message to rich nations on Monday, saying that they should not shift the burden of reducing emissions on developing countries, like India, as these countries are not responsible for climate change. The advanced countries must leave enough room for developing countries to grow.
The France and Indian governments have launched the International Solar Alliance (ISA) initiative at the at the United Nations climate change summit in Paris, France, to boost solar energy in developing countries.
He said investments would be attracted in the solar sector, joint ventures encouraged and innovative financing mechanisms developed.
Later, speaking at the Mission Innovation event hosted by Mr.Obama, Mr. Modi said, “Our innovation initiative should be driven by public goal, not just market incentives, including on intellectual property”.
By demonstrating the commitment of so many countries to solar power, the alliance also hopes to inspire companies to develop more low-priced solar solutions.
“The vast majority of humanity is blessed with generous sunlight round the year”.
The Paris climate change conference also known as Conference of Parties (CoP-21) is set to kick off tomorrow in Paris and will go on till December 11. “We wish to improve the situation in connection with Pakistan”, Narendra Modi said. “Many in India begin their day with a prayer to the sun”, the prime minister said.
“India has emerged as the natural leader for this alliance, with its ambitious targets to install 175GW of renewable energy by 2022”, said Arunabha Ghosh, chief executive of the Council for Energy, Environment and Water in India, according to The Guardian.
Noting that conventional energy was still needed, he said it should be made clean and an end to its use should not be imposed.
The alliance has been described by Modi as “the sunrise of new hope”.
“There is already a revolution in solar energy”.
The Indian prime minister mooted the idea of such an alliance during a summit between India and African nations in New Delhi last month.
