A hostile press pounced on GOP frontrunner Donald Trump after his announcement that he will meet with black religious leaders on Monday, but Trump isn’t taking the bait.
Trump came under fire last week after saying at a rally and on television that he had seen thousands of people in Jersey City cheer the collapse of the twin towers in Manhattan. They also expressed concern that the meeting on Monday would “give Trump the appearance of legitimacy among those who follow your leadership and respect your position as clergy”.
The real estate magnate, during an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Monday, suggested that security would always trump privacy under his watch. “But I saw it on television, I saw clips, and so did many other people – and many people saw it in person”. I think probably it will be an endorsement by some.
A 2008 Gallup poll found that only seven percent of Muslims around the world said the 9/11 attacks were “completely” justified and viewed the United States unfavorably.
Faced with a potential disaster on their hands should the attending pastors address the reporters in front of the candidate, the Trump campaign called off the press conference and stated the meeting would remain private – no press allowed. “Anybody who knows Donald Trump personally knows that he’s not a racist”, said Steve Parson, a black pastor from Richmond, Virginia.
A much anticipated meeting between Donald Trump and about 100 black pastors and religious leaders was abruptly canceled when it became apparent that majority would not endorse the candidate. During the Fox TV debate in Cleveland in August, Kasich said Trump “is hitting a nerve in this country”, adding ” people are frustrated.
When asked by a reporter if he wanted to comment about BLM, Trump dismissed: “Black lives are very important, white lives are very important, and to me all lives are very important”.
But according to Trump, the overall meeting Monday was nothing but positive. And many people saw it in person, I’ve had hundreds of phone calls to the Trump Organization saying we saw it, dancing in the streets…
The situation with the black pastors is the latest misstep by Mr. Trump. And no press to spread the gospel of Trump to black voters across America?
Trump has been courting the support of evangelical black clergy members as he works to broaden his appeal in a crowded Republican field.

And while it is true that law enforcement arrested a number of people who were celebrating the attacks, Trump’s version is a bit distorted, as they were not Muslim, but in fact, Israelis.
