A suspect is in custody after a seven-month-old baby was shot and killed Saturday.
A call was made to 911 but the baby had succumbed to his injuries before help had arrived, Rome Police said.
Bartle, who lives with the child’s mother, had earlier cleaned and then loaded the shotgun, officials said.
According to Rome Police, Henry W. Bartle, 18, of Rome, was charged with criminally negligent homicide.
Nathaniel’s grandfather, Gary Muntz, of Whitesboro, said his 19-year-old daughter, Selena Hitt, moved out of his home back in June and moved in with Bartle against his wishes.
Police said the shooting happened in front of the child’s mother and a third man who was also in the home.
Police say he loaded it and put an accessory grip onto it. He attempted to take the gun off of his lap and stand up, with the muzzle pointed toward the child.

Bartle is now being held on an unspecified bail, after having been charged in the death.
