$500000 check dropped in Salvation Army kettle in Minnesota

Salvation Army Northern Division spokeswoman Julie Borgen told NBC News that each of the 575 kettle locations across the Twin Cities metro area averages about $30 in donations per hour.

The charity confirmed that the check has cleared and that the couple wishes to remain anonymous.

The anonymous duo explained the record donation, saying they did it “in hopes of encouraging others to give as generously as they can”.

Until then, the largest single gift the Twin Cities chapter had ever received was $25,000.

A big-hearted couple who once lived off food discarded from grocery stores have given the Salvation Army in Minnesota half a million reasons to feel happy this Christmas.

The couple said their donation was also meant to honor one of their fathers, who served in World War I and appreciated the donuts and coffee brought to soldiers by the Salvation Army Donut Girls. “Last year, the Salvation Army served almost 43,000 throughout different programs and services that we provide all throughout the year”.
