But all that glory days seems to be in the past now, Suarez is no longer winning individual awards but rather club trophies which many fans around the world don’t even recognize his importance to Barcelona. He has done this no matter what the circumstances, despite continually facing investigations over his transfer to Barcelona from Santos. Any concerns regarding how Barca would fair in Messi’s injury-enforced absence were firmly dispelled as Neymar and Suarez stepped up to the plate and delivered in impressive fashion. Luis Suarez, the other offensive partner of Barcelona’s famed attacking trident was also a strong contender to make the final three, as was Bayern Munich’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.

Messi, whose best player award was determined by technical data, added: “I am happy to be once more among the three best, and to go to another gala”.

But this is Neymar’s first nomination for the top prize after a glittering year. Disappointingly, for him, his penalty was saved with Adriano scoring the follow-up.

The 23-year-old joined the Spanish giants from Santos in the summer of 2013 and has established himself as one of the world’s best players during his successful spell at the Catalan club. Plus, he is simply the best player on the best team in the world. “If today I’m being spoken of in such terms, it’s a clear sign that what I’m doing is working”.
