Hull have so far knocked out Swansea City and in form Leicester and will be hoping to continue their run of upsets against City, who are bound to offer the toughest test yet. If this one had gone in, you never know what would have happened.

“But these things happen in the cups in our country”.

“But we were confident in ourselves to get the ball and pass it around”.

“It is frustrating but it’s the first time we have lost in a long while”.

Everton defeated Middlesborough to qualify for the semi-finals.

The tie was wrapped up with 15 minutes to play when Phil Bardsley smashed home a low free kick with Stoke reaching their first League Cup semi-final since they won the trophy in 1972. “Anything can happen at 1-0 but it was important for us not to concede any chances”. I’ll have to talk with him tomorrow (Monday). But I am not insane.

“We must try to recover the players for Tuesday”, said Pellegrini.

“It feels ideal, but the good news is that we can do better”.

“Our fans have a big part to play”.

For the hosts they fell for the electric Silva, who hit the side netting from a tight angle, and Bony, who sent an effort straight at Eldin Jakupovic from distance.

“Kun came off as a precaution”, Pellegrini said of Aguero.

“It’s one we should really look forward to”, Bruce added.

And Pellegrini was at a loss when quizzed on his team’s performance after the game.

Ryan Shawcross is suspended, though it would be a mistake to assume that they only started shutting out opponents when he returned from injury, as they actually achieved three in five right before his recall.

“We are up against it, but welcome back to the big time again”.

A file picture taken on August 16, 2015, shows the newly constructed South Stand of Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium in Manchester, north west England. “We will do everything we can to win”.

“These are certainly as good as it gets, so let’s go and enjoy the challenge”.

“We had one or two chances to make it 2-2 and that would have been it, but they are a hell of a side”.

In the other games, Liverpool will visit Southampton on Wednesday in the only match between two Premier League teams.

He said: “For everyone asking, I’m fine”. But we are in the quarter-finals of a cup. “I’ve got people who have waited patiently to play and I’ve had to stay true to the squad because I felt that was vitally important”.
