The official announcement indicated that there was a mutual agreement between the two sides and Richt will step down after he met with Greg McGarity, athletics director of Georgia.

While there is growing interest in Mark Richt as a head coaching candidate, it’s doubtful that Georgia’s recently-ousted leader will jump into one of the current openings or coach anywhere in the coming year.
The University of Georgia, by making its decision to fire Mark Richt, has once again proved it might be the most delusional, overrated program in college football history.
“I’ll say this – if and when I do coach again, I’m looking forward to coaching again in terms of being more hands-on”, said Richt.
There was not much more information from behind the scenes on the day after Mark Richt was let go as the University of Georgia’s football coach.
McGarity said a search for Richt’s replacement would begin “immediately” and that the school will hire a search firm.
Richt spent 15 years at Georgia, posting a 145-51 record overall. Dooley said. “I think Mark Richt would be a good start”.
Chip Towers of Dawg Nation reported Richt’s ouster was entirely so the Bulldogs could pursue Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. It also lost to Florida, 27-3, along with a double-digit lead against Tennessee. “I miss coaching quarterbacks”.
Georgia’s tradition of hiring or promoting assistant coaches to become coach includes Dooley, Ray Goff and Richt, who was the former offensive coordinator at Florida State.

Richt will take the Bulldogs to a 15th consecutive bowl game this postseason when he coaches this team for the final time.
I’m willing to bet that what Georgia gets is a bunch of 5-7 or 6-6 seasons, while they wander aimlessly in the SEC desert.
In a presser carried on the SEC Network, Richt said he wasn’t done coaching, though he didn’t say what he would do next. I would love for our seniors to win that 40th game. “When we don’t make it to Atlanta, I’m miserable, too”. The Cougars plays in the American Athletic Conference championship game Saturday.
It especially hits home with a couple of former Benedictine players who played for Coach Richt. They would want to bring in an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator that have experience who could help Richt get on his feet in the NFL.
At one point on Monday, Houston coach Tom Herman said he had “agreed in principle” to a new contract with the Cougars.

Richt, 55, said Saturday that the team “came up short of our goal” to win the SEC championship. “That’s between us. There were a lot of things we talked about, and I’ll just leave it at that”.
