Eighteen of the students injured were from Radford, said Joe Carpenter, vice president for university relations and chief communications officer at the school.

Sgt. Steve Vick with Virginia State Police said the bus originated in Richmond and was carrying students from Virginia Tech and Radford.

According to The Daily News, Virginia state police said that Thomas B. Chidester, the driver, would be charged with reckless driving after losing control on a curved ramp.

“The patient is now in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery”, said Lt. Jason Elmore with Chesterfield Fire and EMS.

The bus had initially picked the students up at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and had as its first destination the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, according to the police statement.

“Had that bus rolled one or two more times, those kids would have been in really bad shape today”, Taylor said.

According to Geller, the crash occurred in the northern part of Chesterfield, as the bus was going around a curve on a ramp onto southbound Chippenham Parkway from Powhite Parkway. A lot of them only had bruises and bumps. “The passengers are students returning to the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Radford University”.

Officials are still investigating the cause of this crash.

The Virginia State Police could not be reached to verify the reports’ details. At this stage of the investigation, the trooper has determined that speed was a factor in the cause of the crash.

The bus company added that it dispatched another bus to accommodate students wishing to get to campus as soon as it learned of the accident.
