Johnston said he hopes Canadians will extend a “warm welcome” to the many Syrian refugees who will be arriving by the end of February, calling the crisis both a challenge and an opportunity.
As for where the four million people who’ve left Syria and the four million more displaced within the country should go in the meantime, Colyer maintains remaining close to their homeland is the best solution.
“You bring a lot of people here from another culture and what they will tend to do is congregate together, that’s a natural thing, which makes them much easier targets for radicalization”, he said.
“Advocates have argued these “transportation loans” saddle vulnerable new Canadians with thousands of dollars in debt before they even reach their new homes — making it more hard for them to integrate economically and support themselves. We need to help them there.
Two weeks ago, the Onion ran an article with the headline “GOP Warns Refugees Likely To Be Driven To Terrorism By Way America Would Treat Them”.
“No one wants to be a refugee”, Scribner said. “We can’t just say to these countries that the burden is completely on them”, she said. Lack of electricity adds further hardship, as people are forced to choose between having light to see their way to the bathroom at night (six shelters share one bathroom) and charging their cellphones, which connects them to family and the outside world.
Federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) ministers responsible for immigration met today to reaffirm their commitment to welcoming Syrian refugees to Canada over the coming days and months.
Earlier in the program, Carson was asked about Friday’s shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood center where three people died. Police have not disclosed an alleged motive at this time, but sources tell the Associated Press that Dear mentioned “no more baby parts” after his arrest.
“If you do that, you solve that problem without exposing the American people to a population that could be infiltrated with terrorists who want to destroy us”, Carson said.
Planned Parenthood issued a statement alleging that witnesses confirmed Dear was “motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion”.
