The junior headlined a class of six offensive players named to either the coaches’ or media’s all-Big Ten teams and was also named the Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year.
It should come as no surprise, but the head coach of the only undefeated team left in the Big Ten-Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz-has been named Coach of the Year, by both the media and the coaches.
Against Iowa’s multidimensional offensive attack, Michigan State will need McDowell to help control the line of scrimmage, pressure Beathard and bottle up Canzeri. 500 yet again. Three months later, here we are: 12-0 overall, 8-0 in the Big Ten, undisputed champions of the Big Ten West division, and 4th in the College Football Playoff rankings. A victory two weeks ago against the then-undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes team propelled them to this game against the undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN on December 5. Our College Football Public Betting page shows that 77% of wagers for the Big Ten Championship Game are now on the Spartans, who are 3.5-point favorites according to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI. Naquan Jones, a “four-star” defensive tackle from Evanston Township, Ill., who committed to MSU in June and reopened his recruitment November 10, announced Tuesday that he is back in the fold with the Spartans. His receptions total is tied for second on the NU season chart, while his yardage total ranks fourth in school history.
There was a lot of that in the years that followed, with the Hawkeyes an afterthought not just in the national title conversation but the Big Ten as well. Like Iowa, Michigan State has enjoyed its share of success against Big Ten opponents recently with a 24-2 straight up record in its last 26 games against conference foes.
Birks ranks fifth in the Big Ten this season with 398 kills and is second with 3.89 kills per set.
A pair of Huskers earned honorable-mention all-conference accolades. Sophomore hybrid-back Jalin Marshall was honored by the media.
Iowa finished its regular season unbeaten for the first time since 1922. This season he has completed 184-of-303 attempts for 2,354 yards and 14 touchdowns, with just three interceptions. Carter had 20 of his receptions in Big Ten games, including four in each of the final two contests. The individual award winners also appear below.
DL-Malik McDowell, Michigan State; Maliek Collins, Nebraska; Dean Lowry, Northwestern; Adolphus Washington, Ohio State.
