Chicago protests continue into the weekend
“The protesters did take over the street for sometime today blocking stores but it seems to have been a safe experience thus far”, said John Curran, a vice-president of marketing for The Magnificent Mile Association. The Tribune reported that Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and U.S. Reps. Many liken McDonald’s case to that of Michael Brown, the black teenager shot dead by a white policeman in Ferguson, Missouri previous year. Expect the protests to continue. Some people were angry that they got a phone call urging them to join Friday’s protest.

“We are prepared for the long haul”, he said. “City administrations depend on these police departments to maintain law and order; city officials feel that antagonizing them may compromise this goal”. Some stores along MI voluntarily locked their doors as the march went past.
Not everyone was enthusiastic about the tactic. They also demanded a federal investigation into the Chicago Police Department. “And I’m personally grateful to the people of my hometown for keeping protests peaceful”.
Activists wanted to bring greater attention to the October 20, 2014, execution style murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by a Chicago Police Officer.
On the eve of Thanksgiving, President Obama shared his personal sentiments about the shooting death of Laquan McDonald – the 17-year-old Chicagoan who was shot 16 times by police officer Jason Van Dyke. She also added that they wanted to make sure they were following all the rules so the indictment would not be dismissed due to tainted evidence. “Don’t go halfway, go all the way”, Johnson said. Tyshawn Lee’s murder has prompted a good deal of outrage and soul-searching in Chicago, but nothing like the marches and demonstrations protesting the death of Laquan McDonald. Why was the Laquan McDonald video released prior to the Chicago mayoral election? Taylor said the third district is his local police station, and he questioned the values of those cops who did not speak up after McDonald’s shooting.
“The path forward is to keep people united, to keep people watching out for each other, to try to teach people to treat each other with respect and kindness”. Shut it down! She said she was representing her family, including her three grandchildren. They said their hands were tied, in part by the city’s agreement with the union. It shows McDonald jogging down a street and then veering away from Van Dyke and another officer who emerge from a police SUV drawing their guns.
Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder this week by Alvarez.
They stopped short of defending Van Dyke’s actions – which were caught in a graphic video made public this week – but did say it was important to place them in the context of a racially divided city beset by violence.
Energizing the ongoing protests are a growing number of black community leaders and groups, including the City Council Black Caucus, which says it will seek a vote of no confidence against police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. Emanuel has said he will stand behind McCarthy. McDonald, who can be seen running down the center line of the four lane road before Van Dyke’s SUV veered into his path, slowed his pace to a fast, shuffling walk and changed his direction slightly.

That leaves barely enough time for him to take off his seat belt and exit his police SUV.
