Chicago mayor: McCarthy out as police superintendent
Dean said the shootings would be in retaliation for the killing of Laquan McDonald who was shot 16 times by Officer Jason Van Dyke previous year.

The superintendent of the Chicago Police Department has been relieved of his duty, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced in a Tuesday morning news conference.
They added the video “clearly does not show McDonald advancing toward [Van Dyke]”.
A small group of protesters in the courtroom stood silently while Judge Donald Panarese Jr. watched the video on laptop computer, then cried out after he announced his decision, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. A judge ordered Dean held until Tuesday’s bond hearing, when prosecutors will likely agree to let him be released to his mother.
Thousands of protesters barred shoppers from entering stores on Chicago’s upscale Magnificent Mile during the Black Friday extravaganza and smaller demonstrations have disrupted traffic in recent days.
High-profile killings of black men at the hands of mainly white law enforcement officials in USA cities over the past two years have prompted demonstrations across the country, and have stoked a national debate on race relations and police tactics. Alvarez said last week that the 7.62-centimeter blade recovered from the scene had been folded into the handle. One of the officers, Van Dyke, opens fire from close range.
An online threat against the University of Chicago that led the school to cancel all classes and activities on Monday appears to have been motivated by the fatal shooting of a black teenager by a Chicago officer in 2014, federal authorities said. “He is very scared about the consequences that he’s facing, he’s concerned for his wife and his children, but he is handling it like a professional and he is ready to move on and take this step by step”.
Before McDonald’s family could even file a lawsuit, the city gave them a $5 million settlement on the condition that the family agreed not to publicly release the dashcam footage of the teen’s death. “McDonald was reportedly holding a knife, which he used to slash the tires of a police vehicle, but was moving away from officers at the time when he was killed”, the news outlet said.
The grainy images don’t show exactly what officers are doing or for how long, but Darshane recently told the Tribune that police had come with their own information technology specialist and hung around the restaurant until about midnight. As for Van Dyke, he faces a minimum of 20 years in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.
Angelo said Monday it appeared McDonald “squared his shoulders” toward the officers when Van Dyke started shooting.
“The shooting of Laquan McDonald requires more than just words”, Emanuel said in a statement earlier Tuesday. Van Dyke emptied his magazine in about 15 seconds, with most of the shots fired after McDonald had fallen to the pavement.

Authorities say Laquan McDonald, 17, was armed with a 4-inch knife when Officer Jason Van Dyke confronted him.
