Seven students killed, 21 injured in Kano dormitory fire

It was a harrowing experience for students of Kano Goverment Girls College, Jogana Monday morning when a mysterious fire that swept through their dormitory claimed 7 life, while 21 others were injured, officials said.

The fire incident which occurred yesterday midnight, November 29, started from the biggest hostel of the school while the students were fast asleep at about 2am.

According to the Executive Secretary of Secondary Schools Management Board, Husaini Ganduje, who confirmed the inferno, the cause of the fire is still not known, also confirming that seven students died in the fire while those who sustained injuries were now receiving treatment.

The Kano State Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, confirmed the deaths and the inferno.

However, the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Saraki in a statement by his special adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu condoled with the Kano State government, families of the victims and the school management.

He said Sunday night’s fire gutted the hostel of the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Gezawa, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Kano city.

He also set up a technical committee to identify the cause of the fire and map out strategies for renovation of the hostel.

The deputy governor commended the community where the school is sited for its assistance during the fire outbreak and acknowledged the contributions of companies in the area for providing fire fighting equipment to help put out the fire.
