First BlackBerry Priv software update arrives to improve performance, security

Better performance: The Priv’s software has been tweaked to improve overall system performance. Some of the changes include an improved camera that will make the app faster, as well as being able to deliver better images in low-light image conditions. BlackBerry had committed itself to monthly security updates for the Priv and is sticking to its word.

BlackBerry Priv users who purchased the smartphone from ShopBlackBerry should start receiving update notifications OTA (over-the-air) while carrier-purchased Priv handsets are expected to receive it starting Monday. Considering that privacy is the USP of the device, the company will roll out frequent software updates for the device.

Following the software update, owners of the BlackBerry Priv will notice that the speed of the camera app has increased.

Enhanced security: The release includes security patches, and BlackBerry said you should “rest easy knowing your device is protected against the latest Android security threats”. I believe that by the end of this week everyone should receive the new update. Once on WiFi, you’ll either see the notification for the update or you can go to Settings – About – System Updates and then tap “Check for Updates”.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network before downloading the update, in order to avoid unnecessary data charges. Normally, 50% or more battery life is more than adequate to see the job through. Running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, the new BlackBerry smartphone is also reported to feature a 5.1-inch touchscreen with 2560 x 1440 resolution, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 16-megapixel rear camera and a five-megapixel front snapper.
