Small business Saturday keeps things local

“All day long it’s just been people in, people out”, says owner of Brown’s Cycles Bike Shop, Chris Brown.

Small Business Saturday was first recognized in 2010 in an effort to sway shoppers to brick and mortar stores that are important to local economies.

On a day that falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is when local businesses thrive.

“Even people that don’t shop with us, that bought things online, we still try to help them out”.

Dayla Lemler of Lemler Valley Farm said, “We don’t just take out dollars that we make here and take them home, we spend them with each other”.

Wausau River District has been promoting the event to encourage more people to keep dollars local.

Saturday, the Austin Independent Business Alliance is hosting a Holiday Shop Hop all over Austin.

American Express Credit Card Company launched the Small Business Saturday initiative. You know, mom and pop, little stores. Darcy Carter of Small Business Association told us in an interview on Local 44 News This Morning.

Although this day is dedicated to fulfilling that desire, Shaw hopes that the community will continue to support small businesses every day.

Our Country Hearts began as a small gift shop.it was able to expand because of the community support.

One local shopper, CJ Patrick said she loved the feel of a small shop experience. “Businesses that have been here for so long are still here”, said Buriani, who has been in business for 20 years.

All over Jacksonville, small businesses are working to offer something different.

“Small businesses are kind of the heart of the community”.

Last year, shoppers supported neighborhood businesses like never before.
