Volvo enters the premium sedan market, introduces the brand new S90

GOTHENBURG, Sweden-Volvo Car Corp. unveiled a new sedan on Wednesday, betting on a mix of fuel efficiency and understated Scandinavian design to compete with German rivals and accelerate its comeback on the US market.

The Volvo XC90 is paving the way for the all-new Volvo S90 premium saloon – the second vehicle to be based on Volvo’s in-house-developed SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) technology.

As for the hybrid T8, the powertrain makes 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque in the XC90 and can power the SUV for 25 miles of all-electric driving, so expect the lighter S90 to have even more range. The auto will feature Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous cruise control, which essentially keeps it centred in the lane up to 130 km/h.

The S90 is presented as the next step in Volvo’s resurgence, while also pushing forward toward its “Vision 2020” goal of no occupant deaths in any new Volvo by the end of the decade. Sales were further boosted by strong demand for the XC90 and XC60 models, which were the best-selling Volvos in the United States for the month. “With $11 Dollars billion of investment over the past five years we have not only reimagined what Volvo Cars can be – we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand”, said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO, Volvo Car Group. It’s underpinned by the same modular platform and features the same powertrains as the XC90 – that is to say, the hybrid T8 and gasoline-powered T6 models will be available.

“Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior”, Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president design at Volvo Car Group, commented.
