Adele beats previous single sales-week record, held by *NSYNC

Earlier in the week, 25 beat the previous single-week sales record, held by *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached, when it launched with 2.42 million sold (in the week ending March 26, 2000).

Usher’s 2004 album Confessions sold more than a million copies in its debut week.

According to the article from Billboard, Adele has broken some other records as well.

First-week sales figures for “25” were initially announced at 3.38 million, but an additional 100,000 were later added due to digital sales of “track equivalent albums” and “streaming equivalent albums”.

The video for Adele’s comeback single Hello was the biggest debut of any other video this year, and racked up 50 million views in the first 48 hours it was online, beating Taylor Swift’s vid for Bad Blood. However, Billboard notes that since 25 was released on a Thursday, Adele achieved her new record in only three days. Oasis’ third album Be Here Now had the previous record, as the rockers sold 696.000 copies its debut week in 1997.

Ed Sheeran’s “X” was previously the best-selling album of 2015. CBS News reported on Beyoncé’s victory at the end of 2013. The streaming units of the album comes from streams of the single “Hello” alone. Just how successful was it?

Adele’s work was released on November 20 and so is of course expected to do well during the holiday shopping season as well as during 2016. “It sold 828,773 internationally”, said the report. The powerhouse album shifted an unprecedented 3.48 million copies in its first tracking week, which is enough to secure the number one spot many, many times over.

“You looked at those numbers and thought you’d never see those numbers again”. For people like Taylor Swift and Adele, money is no concern. The follow-up to 21 has become the fastest selling album in the U.S. – just rubbing more salt into the wound for American fans disappointed that her 2016 tour is limited to the United Kingdom and Europe. NME has the news.
