Koreas agree to hold vice-ministerial talks next month

Young men have been told to model their hairstyle on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, whose eccentric hairdo is known in the North as the “ambitious” style, where the sides and back of the head are nearly clean shaven and only the top is left.

The two Koreas agreed on Thursday to hold a rare high-level dialogue next month, in line with an accord struck in August aimed at easing cross-border tensions, the unification ministry in Seoul announced.

The two Koreas held a working-level meeting in the historic truce village of Panmunjom and made a decision to continue peace dialogue in an attempt to improve ties between the two nations.

The agenda would include “pending issues related to the improvement of ties”, said the official.

“South and North Korea agreed to send a delegation led by vice-ministerial officials for the discussion”, Jeong Joon-hee, spokesman for the Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean relations, said on Friday.

A key element of the inter-Korean deal on August 25 is to hold high-level government talks as early as possible either in Seoul or Pyongyang.

On 4 August two South Korean soldiers by the border were seriously injured by a landmine blast, which was blamed on the North. The North denied planting the landmine.

The drill utilized K-9 self-propelled artillery launchers despite North Korea’s warning on Sunday that it would respond “mercilessly” should the South Korean live-fire drill push through near the tense border.

On behalf of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Lin expressed honest condolences and deepest sorrow over Kim’s death, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

A number of Chinese fishermen are also arrested every year for illegally fishing in South Korea’s western and southern waters, often leading to violent clashes with the South Korean coast guard.

Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor of North Korean studies at Korea University, said, according to Yonhap News Agency: “The North will likely call on Seoul to lift its sanctions against the North and to reopen the Kumgang tour program”.
