Browns’ McCown done for season

He replaced Josh McCown, who was placed on injured reserve this morning with a broken collarbone, in the fourth quarter and went 7-of-10 for 77 yards, including a 42-yard tying touchdown to Travis Benjamin.

“To me, it’s more about Austin and seeing what he can do than length of punishment”, Pettine said.

“I have a series of meetings scheduled”, Pettine said on a conference call Tuesday.

With this season being lost so early, it would be better to put Davis on the field as he would give the team a better chance to salvage anything from this season.

Pettine is only committing to Davis, would went 3-5 in eight starts for St. Louis last season, as his starter for this week. But Travis Coons’ 51-yard attempt was blocked by the Ravens and returned by Will Hill 64 yards for a TD as time expired, sending the Browns (2-9) to their sixth straight loss.

Pryor, who can also serve as a No. 3 quarterback, was slowed by a nagging hamstring injury during the preseason and only played in Cleveland’s final exhibition.

“Whether it was in the locker room, practice field, game day, just the positive energy that he exuded, the leadership, I just can not say enough positive things about Josh McCown and what he’s done for this football team and what he means to this football team”, Pettine said. I don’t want to declare, ‘Hey, this is what it’s going to be here on out.’ These are two young quarterbacks that have upside and we want to see what that upside is. The Browns were intrigued with his potential but decided not to keep him.

In announcing Manziel was being demoted, Pettine at first said McCown would be the starter going forward but then altered his stance to say it was only for one game. “Tough for a two-minute drive, made a couple plays, was able to come in on very short notice”. Manziel has also run for 90 yards in his seven games.

So now there is another quarterback “controversy” (depending who you ask) for the rest of the season. He has completed 59.4 percent of his passes this year with five touchdowns, two interceptions and a rating of 88.4. Pettine said acquiring a third quarterback is “on the table for discussion”.
