Obama Thanksgiving message likens refugees to pilgrims

Over 2,200 Syrian refugees have already been resettled into the US since October of 2010, says the State Department. The call, led by White House Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough, sought to ease their concerns and share details on the federal refugee resettlement process and security screening measures. According to Republicans, this step is important following a terrorists attack in Paris on Friday, killing more than 120 people.

In three US opinion polls published by Bloomberg, NBC News and the Washington Post/ABC News this month, 53 to 56 percent of respondents said no more Syrian refugees should enter.

President Barack Obama urged Americans to show generosity to Syrian refugees in his Thanksgiving message – reminding them that the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620 were themselves fleeing persecution.

The letter came after more than two dozen governors, mostly Republicans, vowed to block efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in their states. “Based on that, we’re very comfortable receiving these families, which by the way, are mostly women and children”, Canny said.

Even though Europe has been flooded with Syrian refugees, those migrants account for about 10% percent of all Syrian refugees seeking asylum, according to United Nations data.

Carey ended his letter by stating, “ORR is committed to ensuring that all refugees receive the assistance and services vital to achieving their potential in the United States and becoming self-sufficient, integrated members of our communities”. One of the suicide bombers is believed to have sneaked into the country as part of a group of refugees.

Obama has promised to veto the bill in the unlikely event it manages to pass in the Senate. But, his administration also said it is “examining options for further enhancements” to Syrian refugee screening, acknowledging a need to address the broad security concerns of lawmakers and the public.
