Maryland will hire Michigan’s DJ Durkin as new head coach
ESPN’s Joe Schad first reported the hire.

While at Michigan, Durkin helped orchestrate one of the most dominant stretches in team history, coaching the Wolverines to three shut-outs versus BYU, Northwestern and Maryland.
Durkin was brought in last winter under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh to run the defense and coach the linebackers.
Maryland, which finished 3-9, was searching for a new head coach after firing Randy Edsall midway through the season. School decision makers likely noted Durkin’s experience with Urban Meyer, both at Bowling Green and Florida.
Comments from university president Wallace D. Loh shortly after Edsall’s dismissal suggested that Maryland might look for an offensive-minded coach to energize the fan base with points on the scoreboard.
A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Durkin formerly served as Stanford’s defensive coordinator from 2007 to 2009 under Harbaugh before moving on to Florida to serve as defensive coordinator under Will Muschamp. Anyone that knows Durkin usually describes him as passionate, energetic and enthusiastic.

Now that the Maryland job is off the market, that means there is one less job for former UGA coach Mark Richt.
