Browns to start QB Austin Davis; Johnny Manziel is backup
Photos and videos of Manziel partying emerged following the team’s bye week, just a short time after Pettine named him the starter for the remainder of the season.

While a series of meetings with the quarterbacks, coaches and front-office staff will determine who Mike Pettine names the starter for Week 13 and beyond, Davis’ performance makes the decision a tough one. Brent Urban playing his first game of the season blocked Coons’ field goal attempt and before Browns fans could say oh no there goes the win, it was damn here comes the loss.
It may no longer be about what Cleveland Browns troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel deserves right now.
Davis was signed earlier in the season after he was cut by the St. Louis Rams; he was 7-of-10 with 77 passing yards, completing six consecutive passes, including a 42-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin. Davis almost engineered a successful come-from-behind victory on Monday night versus the Ravens but a blocked field goal-turned-touchdown for Baltimore cost Cleveland the game. McCown’s out for the season with a broken clavicle, and Manziel might not be far behind him.
Asked how Manziel can return to the starting role, Pettine said, “Continue to work”.
“To me, it’s more about Austin and seeing what he can do than length of punishment”, Pettine said. Would Pettine go with Manziel or Davis? “We’re going to take everything into consideration and then make a decision for this week that is best for the team”.
McCown was signed to a three-year deal to stabilize Cleveland’s wobbly quarterback situation. He needs to play like he did in a September start against the Tennessee Titans, or in his last game, when he threw for 372 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Remarkably, Davis is an undrafted 26-year-old who walked on to the Southern Miss football team in 2007.
“We’ll revisit this”, Pettine said Wednesday.

After the Bengals waived Pryor in June, the Browns claimed him and worked him at wide receiver during OTAs, training camp and the preseason. “I thought once he got out there next time, settled in, he was solid”.
