Online Black Friday Sales Very Strong, Driven By Mobile Technology

Average spending per person over the weekend totaled $299.60 with an average of $229.56 specifically going towards gifts, or 76.6 percent of total purchases.

Americans who shopped online this past Thanksgiving holiday week pointed to several reasons for doing so, according to a poll from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). Strictly online players like Amazon and eBay also performed well.

Of those who shopped in a store over the long weekend, 73 percent said they went on Black Friday, 34 percent said they shopped Thanksgiving Day, and 46 percent on Saturday.

Mobile shopping is growing and accounted for 34% of sales on Thursday and Friday, but tablet sales are declining.

The breakdown between brick-and-mortar and e-commerce sites was 102 million and 103 million, respectively, states the NRF, with average spend per consumer hitting just a bit under $300.

At one point, the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy gave way to Cyber Monday – effectively a migration of the Black Friday concept online – a day the NRF expected 121 million shoppers for this year.

The only retail destinations to report positive growth were retail parks, which recorded a 4.9% year-on-year increase for the weekend as a whole.

At British stores, Black Friday shopper numbers fell 4 percent year-on-year, according to retail researcher Footfall.
