Shoppers Wait in Queue to Access Target Website on Cyber Monday
Both Thanksgiving and Black Friday online sales have outpaced the rise of Cyber Monday. Despite the looming specter of ad-blockers, display ads saw the largest growth of 50 percent over a year ago in pointing people to sales.

Smartphones and tablets accounted for 49 percent of shopping visits (38 percent smartphones, 11 percent tablets), resulting in 28 percent of online sales (17 percent smartphones, 11 percent tablets). In fact, the two highest sold products products out of all of the products available on Amazon.com were the company’s own Fire tablet and Fire TV Stick. There were plenty of deals to be had this Cyber Monday, so how did consumers respond? Amazon said some orders in the USA and Canada had incorrectly applied shipping charges, but it discovered the error and refunded the charges. A Target spokeswoman said volume had been twice as high as its busiest day ever and that as the website had seen spikes in traffic so some visitors were placed in a queue.
In the first 10 hours of the day, online orders totaled an estimated $490 million, according to Adobe.
The National Retail Federation estimates that about 150 million people will shop online or in-store over the long holiday weekend. But it looks like not only did online steal the shopping-show over the weekend, it also stole family dinners. Now, even with broadband access, Cyber Monday continues to be a day when retailers pull out big promotions.
Online sales on Black Friday were massive this year, only marginally trailing Cyber Monday at $2.7 billion in the USA, according to Adobe.
The outage comes at a bad time for Target, which is making a bigger play for e-commerce shoppers – especially on Cyber Monday.
Mastercard, which keeps a track on spending in its card network as well as other forms of payments, said that overall spending was significant.
