Average spending per order was higher on Black Friday ($137) and Thanksgiving Day ($162) than on Cyber Monday ($133), indicating that online shoppers bought less expensive items. However, analysts predicted shoppers prefer buying on the Internet so retailers are more set for online Cyber Monday in the UK.

This matches Adobe’s numbers for Thanksgiving and Black Friday; on both days, sales on iOS more than doubled sales on Android.

“Millennials, on the other hand, are more likely to use mobile-driven tools”, which can include texts, mobile payments and shopping apps, among others, said Kim Finnerty, SVP of research and insights at Epsilon.

Retailers cut back on Thanksgiving hours, rolled out discounts earlier this year and ran more of their bargains online, putting less pressure on consumers to rush out for discounts after their turkey dinners or the next morning.

Among many strong performers, Amazon.com Inc stood out, clocking a 21.1 per cent rise in Cyber Monday sales, according to e-commerce software provider ChannelAdvisor.

Specifically, consumers who were living in Ohio, Wisconsin and Kentucky had to wait for Time Warner Cable to fix the issue before the users were able to shop on Cyber Monday.

Target’s website flashed a message saying there was a site error due to unusually high traffic.

Cyber Monday has come and gone, and the lesson for retailers is a familiar one: invest in online.

In-store sales fell an estimated 10.4 percent to
$20.4 billion from Thanksgiving to Sunday compared to 2014, according to retail analytics firm ShopperTrak.

This year marks the tenth-anniversary of the Cyber Monday event, which was first coined in 2005. While IBM has revealed the growth rates, it does not report on the total sales figures that occurred on this opening day of the holiday shopping season.
