HIV infections still high

The expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has resulted in a reduction of AIDS-related deaths, the WHO statement said on the occasion of the World AIDS Day. Many events were organised by different institutions and organisations throughout Bulgaria on Tuesday.

Free HIV testing is available at the National University Hospital of Iceland and at health clinics around the country. If the world increases its investment from now €15 billion to €28 billion per year into the fight against HIV/AIDS by 2020, the trajectory of the epidemic would be successfully bent toward its end.

He then stressed the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to HIV/AIDS through active participation of all stakeholders including Civil Society Organisations, Private sector, Faith-based organisations, communities and people living with HIV and AIDS. “Additionally, connecting people to the ‘prevention continuum, ‘ in which people at high-risk for HIV infection are regularly tested, counseled and provided a variety of prevention options, could reduce the spread of the virus even further”.

About 36.9 million people globally are living with HIV according to the World Health Organisation, the United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF) and joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS).

There is no need for people who are HIV negative to get infected as this represents failure of HIV interventions in place to save them, Namibia’s Minister of Health and Social Services Dr Bernard Haufiku, has said. The remaining 11% involve HIV transmission through injection drug use.

Besides, the number of new infections has fallen by 35 percent since the turn of the century. “As regards the age group, I would like to say this year’s data shows over half of the newly-registered people – 54% of them – are in the age group of 30 to 49”.
