Israeli police said that an Israeli settler who was in the area shot dead the Palestinian suspect following the incident.

He identified the attacker as 20-year-old Omar Zaatik.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli army said Jawabrah had “a lit Molotov cocktail in hand” and was attempting to hit Israeli cars with it.

More than 100 people have been killed in violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in recent months. The Palestinians claim all of the West Bank for part of a future state. Egypt is now struggling to put down an Islamic insurgency in the volatile north of its Sinai Peninsula, which borders Israel.

Also on Thursday, Israeli troops seized eight public transportation buses in the West Bank city of Nablus, according to drivers at the Al Tamimi company.

The first Palestinian intifada lasted from 1987-1993 and the second from 2000-2005, although both were far more intense and deadly than the present wave of violence. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he opposes confidence-building gestures to the Palestinians until the violence subsides.

The military proposed releasing Palestinian security prisoners who have been jailed in Israel for decades, increasing the number of Palestinians allowed to work inside Israel and giving additional weapons to Palestinian security forces.

The IDF also recommended to the political leadership in Israel that official Palestinian security forces be supplied with weapons and ammunition.
