Ben Carson calls for increased aid to refugee camps

Colyer visited Syrian refugee camps in Jordan last week with Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson.

But rather than arguing that hostility is part of the problem, Carson instead appears to be arguing that alienation is somehow natural and inevitable, rather than the result of conscious action by people who wish to make refugees feel unwelcome in the U.S. Although this may be the case for many of those in camps inside Middle Eastern countries close to Syria, those who have made the effort to go on to Europe tell a different story. President Barack Obama’s administration has said it will accept 10,000 Syrian refugees into the USA over the next year, a plan sharply criticized by many Republicans.

Afterward, he said refugees he spoke to, who were “quite content” in the camp, wanted to be able to return home and did not want to be resettled in the United States.

Considering the reign of terror isn’t going to be over anytime soon, the people fleeing Syria, therefore, need help and refuge from other countries, especially from world powers like the US and European Union. “Having said that, my suspicion is that these people are incredibly resilient and courageous folk who have managed to endure these circumstances and we will be impressed by their resilience”. Also gone are most of his family’s possessions as they left with little more than their clothes.

Yahoo News reports that through the Ikea Foundation’s Better Shelter programme, millions of refugees worldwide are now living in small homes – the majority are 57 square feet – as opposed to tents, which are cheaper but don’t last almost as long.

“They’re not nice”, said Melanie Nezer, a policy director at HIAS, a Jewish nonprofit agency that works with refugees worldwide.

Just over two months ago I began planning a trip over the Thanksgiving Weekend to visit with Syrian Refugees, Jordanian Government Officials, and NGO’s.

A trickle of Syrian refugees seeking to leave Jordan flowed into Canada’s processing centre in Amman on Sunday, the first day of operations at what will eventually become the hub of much of the Syrian refugee resettlement program.

Many details of the plan are still not clear, even though Canada has committed to bringing in 10,000 refugees by the end of the year.

The refugees told Carson that the United States “could provide more support for nations like Jordan”. He says Jordan, in particular, has stepped up to help, seeing its population swell about 25 percent in recent years with refugees, not only from Syria, but also Iraq.

Neighboring countries Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan have taken in large numbers of refugees.

“It’s a fraction of what we spend on sports and entertainment”, he said.

“The reason that the camps are not full is because there’s not adequate funding”, Carson said.
