The Peninsula Health Department is handing out free flu shots Wednesday, while supplies last.
There is more you can do to prevent the spread of the flu in addition to getting a flu shot.
One person who has taken up the offer of the flu vaccine is Kirstin Pollock (32), who has a one-year-old daughter, Alice, and is pregnant with her second child. “We are low right now and it’s really going to be a wait-and-see kind of thing”. Flucelvax, a cell based vaccine, will be available for $32.99, and the standard trivalent flu shot for $26.99, a discount of $5*. “They notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nationally, and then each state coordinated its response so that we could reprioritize and make sure the people that needed the vaccine the most … received the FluMist”.

The Carroll County Health Department will be offering a free, walk-in flu vaccine clinic December 9, suitable for ages 6 months through 18 years. Many people experience symptoms like high fever, stuffy nose and fatigue during flu season. People who might have influenza – particularly if they are in the groups listed above at risk for severe disease and complications – should seek medical care and start antiviral medication as soon as possible.
“It is crucial for everyone six months of age and older to get vaccinated”, said Dr. Carolyn Pass, from Primary Health Partners in Lake Wales.
Reed says the same strain of the flu the dominated most cases last year, will likely be the dominant strain this year. This year, we’ve been lucky to have the weather that we’ve had and it may just not be what people are thinking about. It’s the time to trudge to a physician and get vaccine.
However, the number of people who risk getting the influenza rises geometrically with the number of people who refuse the vaccine.

Individuals with compromised immunity, those with sickle cell disease, without a spleen, with cochlear implants or cerebrospinal fluid leaks should also receive a series of the two pneumococcal vaccines.
