Red Sox, Price agree on 7-year, $217M deal
After the Red Sox were openly saying they didn’t want to spend over a set amount of money following the Sandoval, Hanley, and Porcello signings in 2014, Dombrowski just shelled out and extra $30-32 million a year over the next seven seasons.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports the Red Sox have agreed to a deal with free agent pitcher David Price on a seven-year deal, worth a whopping $217 million.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal – the largest ever for a pitcher – is pending a physical. Price is expected to be introduced at a press conference on Friday in Boston.
Price was the first overall pick in the 2007 draft and is 104-56 with a 3.09 ERA in eight seasons with Tampa Bay, Detroit and Toronto. Price finished the 2015 season with an 18-5 record and posted a 2.45 ERA, 225 strikeouts.
Choosing the Red Sox reunites Price with president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who until this August was the Detroit Tigers’ general manager.
Even if Price opts out after three years, Boston still made the right move, because not only would they get good value if Price declined at a steady pace, his opting out would mean he felt he could get even more on the open market, which suggests outperforming expectations. At the 2014 trade deadline, the Tigers, then run by Dombrowski, acquired Price in a trade with the Rays. But if Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts keep rising, if Blake Swihart has a breakout season, and if Jackie Bradley Jr. stays consistent with his offense, the Red Sox will have an exciting team.
Dombrowski traded a package of prospects to San Diego for closer Craig Kimbrel last month.
After tweeting his support and understanding, fellow Blue Jays pitcher, Marcus Stroman, couldn’t help but throw in a dig, and get his game face on.
David Price and David Ortiz have had several public confrontations in the past three years, but now that the left-handed ace is headed to the Red Sox, Boston’s designated hitter is ready to receive him with open arms.
As soon as the Red Sox were allowed to call Chris Young about playing for them, they called. Please see our terms of service for more information.
South Korean first baseman Byung Ho Park has agreed to a $12 million, four-year contract with Minnesota.
The Sox can offer David Price $217 million but can’t move up their offer up 15 million or so to bring back Lester? He will receive $6.5 million in each of the next two years.

In addition to the money it would have cost the Cubs to sign Price, he has not been very successful during his career come postseason time.
