Clark County: Uber, Lyft won’t have to provide driver names

Though Uber users in CT are celebrating recent rate reductions, local Uber drivers have voiced grave concerns about the changes potentially lowering their already meager earnings.

As more and more of these criminal records that have apparently slipped through the cracks have come to light, it is easy to see why people living in states with looser regulation for Uber drivers are becoming hesitant to trust the company’s screening process. It would add 20 cents to a $20 ride on Uber or Lyft. “Uber does control a lot of the ways that drivers behave on the job”, she says.

The question is crucial to Malaysians, since Uber only requires its drivers to have an insurance coverage that “satisfies the minimum requirement to operate a private passenger vehicle on public roads”. After that they interact with an automated management system primarily delivered by a mobile app.

In a move that is being touted as a win for Uber passengers and drivers, a new Uber Pool service is expected to be launched by May 2016. Instead, drivers who get permits to pick passengers up at the airport will be subject to random, additional checks by airport officials, including background checks and fingerprint tests to confirm their identities. And they reported receiving surveys asking when exactly they will be driving in coming days.

“The methodology hasn’t been decided on”, Shranko said. Yet Uber cars are owned and maintained by individuals, and the evidence is that such vehicles are often cared for with more diligence than pool taxis, which are driven by many drivers, so defects may be less likely to be reported and repaired. “It’s hard to argue that you’re a neutral platform if you’re actively trying to manage supply and demand”.

“We work with a very well-known insurance company and they cover all the rides”.

Some aren’t too thrilled with the new regulations.

TNC laws are being written with Uber’s business model in mind, said Matthew Mitchell, of George Mason University’s libertarian-leaning Mercatus Center. She worked with Luke Stark of New York University, and presented their paper at a conference on labor in the on-demand economy at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels, Belgium, last week.

Min Kyung Lee, a research scientist at Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Machine Learning, published her own study of Uber and Lyft drivers earlier this year. But drivers also complained that they were sometimes pushed to do things that seemed unreasonable, such as make pickups that weren’t nearby. But the ratings you give the drivers are very important because it determines whether Uber will retain them or not, after a period of time. Uber spokesperson Jessica Santillo says the company provides information to drivers to help them grow their income, and that they are free to ignore any suggestions. She said since August, when some drivers first began operating, 1,800 citations have been issued by airport enforcement officers.

Even if the final permit includes language allowing the airport to request lists, cab companies could face another hurdle. The suit, heading to trial next summer, alleges that Uber has enough control that drivers should be considered employees and not contractors, and given the attendant benefits and legal standing.

“We’ve gone farther than nearly any city in the U.S.”, Hales claimed.

Katrina Anderson, Bartolotta’s chief of staff, said its inclusion was part of an overall effort to ensure bipartisan support for the legislation and secure the backing of senators from the Philadelphia area.

“Either the city should deregulate us completely, like them… or regulate them at least closer to us, and let there be fair business competition”, said Kirpal Bajwa, a taxi driver and union leader.
