Politics of grief and gun control after latest shooting

Nearly as quickly as news spread about the shooting in California, news outlets around the country were declaring this the year of the mass shooter.
While this could be attributed to several factors, it still strongly suggests that the ban was highly effective in preventing mass shootings and keeping more unsafe assault weapons out of the hands of civilians. Women account for 50 percent of the victims in mass shootings, compared with only 15 percent of overall gun homicides, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, based on media reports from 2009 through July. “Who is arguing that people who should not have guns because of a criminal background, because of mental problems, should…be able to purchase guns?”
WASHINGTON, United States-America’s latest mass shooting prompted Barack Obama to call for stricter controls Thursday, but his dialed-back rhetoric underscored the complexity of the incident and the perennial difficulty in forcing change. “And yet we have a Congress that explicitly blocks us from collecting data on how we could potentially reduce gun deaths”.
Member and spokesman Phil Mulivor said, “There’s just too many of these incidents”.
Perhaps the most memorable mass shooting in recent memory was Adam Lanza walking into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killing 20 children and six adults in December 2012.
Obama has recently voiced his frustration with the lack of tougher gun control laws in the country after mass shootings, such as in OR in October and in Colorado last week.
Appearing on stage later in the day, Donald Trump told the same group that President Obama’s refusal to use the term “radical Islamic terrorism” was proof “there is something going on with him that we don’t know about”. “It’s also possible this was workplace related”, he said.
As for the Republican hopefuls, the sentiment focused on those affected by the violence – Ted Cruz Tweeting, in part, – quote, ‘Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and the first responders’.
Guns are a potent political symbol in the United States, where the right to bear arms is enshrined in the constitution.
Despite the gun violence that occurred in her state, she praised the gun restrictions in California and called for national restrictions as well.
At one point, Trump even said that his poll numbers rise whenever there’s a tragedy because Americans feel he would protect them. “We must take action to stop gun violence now” – Clinton’s words echoed by Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley.
The NRA made no mention of the San Bernardino shooting on its Facebook page or in its Twitter feed Wednesday or Thursday.

It seems obvious that an overhaul of our laws on gun control is long overdue, but many people are still resistant for a variety of illogical reasons.
