India also sought global support for bringing down the cost of renewable power to reduce reliance on coal, PTI reported.
Negotiators from developed countries welcomed Mathur’s statement saying that they support India’s transition to renewable energy. The book chronicles Mr. Narendra Modi’s vision and commitment to the climate change cause and represents a big step forward in the significant efforts which India is taking to implement initiatives and transform itself into a low carbon economy, for making a real positive difference to the global environment. Acknowledging the reality that conventional energy sources such as coal would continue to be used at present, the Prime Minister said funds were necessary to clean up coal-based generation. up, he said.
Elaborating on the process, Mathur said that tomorrow evening the negotiation text as evolved by the various discussion groups would be consolidated and handed over to the presidency who will then create spin off groups on various unresolved issues that will then be the focus of negotiations.
“India is looking positively to the final outcome from Paris and India will be flexible and show the world that though India is not part of the problem, still is facilitator for the solution”, Mr.Javadekar, who returned from France after attending the official opening of the climate change talks, told PTI in Delhi.
Coal will increase by two to two and half times and this is getting far more attention than the fact that it would also mean a seven times increase of renewables.
“We have made it very clear that solar and wind are our first commitment”.
The Indian delegation would be pushing for a “just and sustainable agreement” here in Paris, Dr Mathur said. “Even the Denmark paradigm does not work for us”. “When we speak of climate justice, we demonstrate our sensitivity and resolve to secure the future of the poor from the perils of natural disasters”, said Mr. Modi. Our goal is that we keep on moving on this path and that coal plants put up in India are more efficient than previous year. We want to make sure renewables provide an increasing amount of electricity.
“There is an initiative led by India and announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which we welcome and joined into, in which we joined a hundred other countries in a new International Solar Alliance (ISA) in order to expand the use and development of solar energy in every corner of the globe”, Secretary of State John Kerry said in Brussels.
