Obama: not going to do an ‘Iraq-style invasion’ in Iraq, Syria

The remarks were made by Al-Jarallah on the sideline of his partaking in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy’s celebrations of the UAE National Day.

“The scale of the threat that we face from ISIL is unprecedented. We’re good at intelligence, we’re good at mobility, we’re good at surprise”, Carter said.

Obama admitted that the new special forces are “not going to single-handedly destroy ISIL”, but they will help by gathering intelligence against the group and help direct airstrikes. His comments at the annual ministerial council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) came after Britain’s parliament voted late on Wednesday to join the US-led bombing campaign over Syria.

The field “represents over 10 percent of their potential income from oil”, the ministry statement said, adding: “Initial analysis of the operation indicates that the strikes were successful”. “Just imagine how quickly this scourge could be eliminated in a matter of literally months if we were able to secure that kind of political resolution”.

Washington has also sent the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman to the Mediterranean along with 3,500 soldiers to Iraq, and is to deploy at least 200 more special forces troops in both Iraq and Syria.

“You know, when I said no boots on the ground, I think the American people understood generally that we’re not going to do an Iraq-style invasion of Iraq or Syria with battalions that are moving across the desert”, the president said in a new interview.

“What I’ve been very clear about is that we are going to systematically squeeze and ultimately destroy ISIL”, the president said, employing an alternative acronym for the jihadi group.

Britain is already part of a U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS from the air, but has until now limited strikes to targets in Iraq. “It’s really going to be a majority support personnel, everything from … aviators to collectors”.

“These … are a small number of highly skilled commandos conducting very precise, very limited operations”, he explained.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter told Congress on Tuesday that the USA military will deploy a new special operations force to Iraq to step up the fight against IS militants, who are determined to hold territory they have seized in Iraq and Syria.

“Overnight, RAF Tornado GR4s, supported by a Voyager air refuelling tanker and a Reaper, and operating in conjunction with other coalition aircraft, employed Paveway IV guided bombs to conduct strikes against six targets within the extensive oilfield at Omar, 35 miles inside Syria’s eastern border with Iraq”, it said. He said there won’t be many of what he called “trigger-pullers”.

The air strikes were carried out within hours of a vote by MPs in the Commons to back extending operations against Islamic State (IS) from neighbouring Iraq.

Secondly, the European Union and member states – including the United Kingdom – are doing a great deal to provide humanitarian assistance, but we must hold the Prime Minister to his pledge to do more, including on the UK’s commitment to reconstruction. He said there won’t be many what he called trigger-pullers. There was no immediate information about casualties from the raids.

The major concern is a foreboding that the government is repeating errors of Tony Blair’s government in Iraq and the more recent events in Libya by committing to military action without a comprehensive long-term strategy involving regional powers and allies. A Gallup survey said 47 percent of Americans favored sending more ground troops to Iraq and Syria and 46 percent were opposed. That’s a different result than the last time Parliament voted.
