Mark Richt To Not Coach UGA Football Team In Bowl Game

Will Kirby Smart still be announced as the next Georgia Head Coach on Sunday, or is that delayed now? Durkin played linebacker at Bowling Green from 1997-2000.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has reportedly agreed to be the next head coach at Georgia.

Alabama color commentator Phil Savage said on the radio Thursday that he has heard Smart will remain with the Tide for the rest of the season if they make the playoffs.

“He was a quarterback on the field and ended up being the captain of the team”. Get to coach one more time with these guys and finish the season? He finished with a 145-51 record, which included two SEC titles. The Tigers were shredded this year to the tune of 422 yards and 27.3 points per game. He began his career as a graduate assistant (1985-88). The former Bulldogs head coach is the new Miami (FL) head coach, per many media reports (first by Peter Ariz).

Smart was hired by Alabama in 2007 and has been defensive coordinator since 2008.

But let me stop telling you how good Richt and his staffs have been at Georgia, I’ll just show you instead. He’s been with me for a while and has done a great job. Miami fired Al Golden mid-season also and were looking for a coach to bring an old attitude and I believe this hire will do that. However, Richt may not take over the team until bowl season is over. Saban has bristled at that notion multiple times before, as did Donnan on Wednesday.

According to the school’s release, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt as well as other assistants will maintain their usual roles.

Donnan believes that landing Cochran would be no small accomplishment for Smart given the importance of that position.

He said he told players they should be happy for a coach who has “worked hard to create another opportunity for himself” and that they’ve been through such coaching changes before. More to the point, the Tigers have lost nine of their last 11 conference games, which includes a pair of double-digit Iron Bowl losses.
