The Red Sox’ $217 million bid was $27 million more than the runner-up Cardinals, Nick Cafardo reported. So the Price deal is not official. There is even a decent chance that the Red Sox will come out ahead on the deal, especially if Price opts out after three years.

After starting the season with a 7-6 record, 2.62 ERA and 0.934 WHIP in 19 starts in Cincinnati to begin the season, Cueto’s statistics dwindled once he was acquired by the Royals. While I imagine that the most significant moves of the off season are behind them, their roster is far from flawless. Sorry, I meant “ace”.
The deal between Price and the Red Sox is pending a physical.
Complaining about the $217 million doesn’t make much sense.
The Red Sox may be at the right spot on the win curve where the value of each marginal win is highest.
We also can’t rule out the possibility of trades clearing up the picture for us. Price will make on average $31 million per year going forward, the most by a pitcher in Major League Baseball history.
So, there you go.
“It’s all about the market” as many Major League Baseball analysts have already argued. And out of all the free agents available, Price is the best bet to succeed in Boston. The 32-year-old Young had been with the New York Yankees since August 2014 and hit. The biggest issue with Price is his postseason resume. But if you actually watched his two starts in the 2015 ALCS – both on the road in Kansas City – you’d see that the ERA and Win-Loss doesn’t tell the whole story.
While Miller or another starter might not be a priority at the winter meetings, getting rid of at least one of last offseason’s regrettable signings-Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez-should be. In the second start, Price allowed two solo home runs in the first two innings, but settled down nicely and was dealing the rest of the way. I loved having him. His postseason numbers aren’t good.
Dombrowski said at the end of the season that his goals were to add a pitcher for the front of the rotation and a fourth outfielder to shore up a lineup that is expected to include youngsters Rusney Castillo, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts. Finally, there was the David Price signing – bolstering the weak Boston pitching staff and giving them a bonafide ace.
